The Tuesday Morning Post: Patches, release dates, and racials
Welcome to another bright and sunny Tuesday Morning. Downtime is a little complicated this morning. Most Realms will be getting some short rolling restarts at 5 AM, but a handful will get a 2 hour downtime instead, while another handful will get a full 3 AM – 11 AM PDT extended downtime. Hardware upgrades for Wrath, perhaps? You can get the list of downed realms here.
It was actually a rather big weekend in news this time around. Not only did Patch 3.0.2 hit the test servers, but we finally got our hands on a solid release date for Wrath of the Lich King and a look at the Collector’s Edition. As if to top it off, yesterday bought us some pretty awesome Priest news in the form of the abolishment of racial spells.
This means there was plenty to talk about this week. Why not get caught up on it now? You can look below for a selection of some of the hottest topics of the past week, or start browsing through the tag, category, and author links to the right if that’s more your speed.

The Care and Feeding of Warriors: A short intermission 1
In all the talk about the beta, about nerfs and buffs to the class, about design philosophies and alterations to talent trees it can be pretty easy to lose sight of the class as a living entity. The other day, while trying to level my night elf warrior on test in the face of the 132 error (I’m pretty sure my drivers are up to date, but I’m going to check to make sure after I get done writing this) a friend asked me why, since I’m almost always tanking, I’m so concerned about the fury and arms trees and their upcoming viability.
“You never DPS. You’re always tanking. So what if fury and arms aren’t as good?”
I had a hard time answering this until I logged onto my old Horde server and talked to Elle, a friend of mine who plays a warrior. Elle has never played prot spec seriously, doesn’t like tanking. A discussion of the state of the various trees made her unhappy, and she made the point that even if prot were capable of good DPS, it wasn’t a playstyle she wanted for her warrior. This makes sense to me:

Death Knight Ghouls’ baby name book
If you spec your Death Knight as Unholy, 30 points into the talent tree you get the Master of Ghouls ability which lets you control your ghoul like a pet. On the PvE beta realms, your ghoul doesn’t have a name yet; it comes up “RandomPetName,” as pictured to the right. However, on the new Murmur PvP realm (US only), level 80 Death Knight premade characters are getting names for their pet-ghouls. An enterprising poster on the beta forums is compiling a list of possible names using set prefixes and suffixes they’ve seen. Here’s the list so far.
Basically, the ghoul names come from picking a prefix from column A and combining it with a suffix from column B. I hope my ghoul’s name comes out to be GraveFeeder or CorpseCruncher. However, as you can imagine, some of these name combinations just will not fly as they may sound too R-rated. (In particular, Blizzard might want to consider killing the “Muncher” suffix altogether.) Similar to a Warlock’s minion name, it appears that the ghoul’s name stays constant, even after dismissing

Arena Season 4: Everything we know about the brutal season
Arena Season 4 is finally here. After a long wait of 30 weeks, longer than previous Arena seasons, Blizzard finally decided to end Season 3 and foist upon the public the widely regarded as brutally ugly Brutal Gladiator gear. The new season is different in that virtually all armor pieces and weapons will have personal ratings requirements in order to purchase them. What do we know about the new season and the events that led to it?
It’s been a long time coming.
Arena Season 3 has dragged on long enough that we’ve speculated on the reasons for Blizzard’s delay and even planned around it:
* Read our report on Drysc’s comment about letting more Sunwell Plateau gear spread into the playing community before starting Season 4 in Season 4 and PvE progression.
* We examine the implications of a long season and how the new mechanics can help stem the flow of Brutal Gladiator gear too rapidly in The Long Wait for Season 4.
* We’ve been drooling over the gear as early as February when the first leaks of Brutal Gladiator items leaked through MMO

Kaplan reveals a stinky achievement
It was just a quick sentence that went by almost completely unnoticed, flew totally under the radar. But in an interview which WoW lead designer Jeff Kaplan gave to WoW Vault, he mentioned a heretofore unknown achievement reward coming up in Wrath that will definitely pass the smell test.
Current Wrath beta testers may have been able to peruse the approximately 500 achievements in the current build, but Kaplan has indicated that by the final release there will be 600-700 achievements for players to attempt. One of these achievements, Kaplan said, can be acquired by collecting pets. It seems that if you collect all the available pets in the game — and I’m not sure if he meant tameable pets or collectible/vanity pets or both — you will be granted a unique pet in the form of a skunk called Stinker. For my two “scents,” I do love me some cute vanity pets, but I’m really glad that WoW doesn’t come in a scratch-n-sniff version or with smell-o-vision.
So now it’s time for you to earn a WoW Insider achievement! Anyone under the age of thirty who can

Death Knight Gameplay Video: Unholy PvP
Jadefury continues to deliver with the Death Knight videos. This time, he runs around in one of the Northrend starting zones and preys upon unsuspecting Alliance. It’s a bit of a gank video, so fair warning if you’re not into that. He uses this level 73 Unholy/Blood build.
Jadefury himself admits, of course, that the first thing he had going for him was the element of surprise — not only ganking, but people panicking as they had to face down an unfamiliar class. We wouldn’t be surprised if PvPing with a Death Knight for the first few months of Wrath is easy if only because of that deer in the headlights phenomenon.
Still, he also showcases some very nice uses of Death Knight PvP skills. My favorite is his use of Death Grip, which looks like it’s fast becoming the signature Death Knight move — not only does it take care of people trying to run away, but he uses it as a spell interrupt in a pinch. There’s also some freezing action going on as well with what looks to be Chains of Ice. Of course, having Magic Suppression probably helps a lot as well.

WarCry Goes to Northrend
There’s a small chance that sometime in the past four years you may have heard about – perhaps even played – an MMORPG called World of Warcraft. One might even go so far as to call it a rather “popular” game, but everybody knows that it’s all relative. If you have heard about said game, you may have also known that there was an expansion pack: The Burning Crusade.
Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, Alliance and Horde… if I may introduce myself: I am a Mage, and They Call me Jayne. No, don’t ask who “They” are, such things are best left unsaid. Trust me, you’ll thank me.
Two years ago, thanks to the capricious hand of Fate (as well as some pretty cool people in some little company located in Irvine, California), I went to Outland to explore the Closed Beta Test for World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade. Water was conjured, dungeons were run, increasingly-painful puns were written, a great many things were set on fire, and a generally fun time was had by all. Of course, all good things must come to an end, and as the Beta came to a close

World of Warcraft: Midsummer Fire Festival
The World of Warcraft team has announced the Midsummer Fire Festival scheduled to run from June 21-July 4, 2008. Packed with special events and items, players can read all about it below:
Type: Holiday Event
Date: June 21 – July 4
Location: Azeroth and Outland
Tending the Flames
Across Azeroth, brilliant bonfires have been lit to signify the hottest months of the year. The chosen Flamekeepers are eager to ensure they continue burning long into the days and nights of the celebration – and they seek the aid of able explorers in doing so. Traverse the land and delve into dangerous dungeons at their behest. You may return hot, sweaty, and a little sooty…but these spiritual guides understand well the need to reward adventurers beyond the promise of “enlightenment.”
Burning Blossoms
Burning Blossoms are the currency used for the Fire Festival and are used to purchase seasonal reward items from Midsummer Suppliers and Merchants. You can collect Burning Blossoms by completing quests, including the daily quests that are part of the festival. Using them near a Fire
