The Queue: The Duke swings the Nutcracker

Welcome back to The Queue, WoW.com’s daily Q&A column where the WoW.com team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Adam Holisky be your host today. In the spirit of the holidays, I’m going to throw a little Duke Ellington at ya’ as today’s listening music. In my prolonged stint as a music major in college (saxophone FTW), I always wanted to play his Nutcracker Suite, but never got the chance. But nonetheless, it’s one of my favorite pieces of music — holiday or otherwise. Enjoy it as we delve into The Queue today, starting off with a question a lot of folks have been asking. Many asked… “What’s happening to the podcast?” The podcast will be continuing! We’ll have a couple new hosts. While nothing is set in stone, it looks like Matt Rossi and Mike Sacco will be doing at least the next one, if not a few more in the foreseeable future. Although no promises — it’s important to remember that plans can and do change. If everyone can make their schedules work, we’ll have a podcast this Saturday, December 26th. But, it’s the day

Two Bosses Enter: Anub’Arak vs. Tribunal of Ages

Two Bosses Enter … but only One Boss Leaves, in WoW.com’s series of fantasy death matches. Welcome to what’s nearly the end of the current round of the five-man Wrath of the Lich King season. Grab a seat, and let’s get ready to rumble! I’m hiding my eyes behind my hands for this one: Anub’Arak (Azjol-Nerub) versus Tribunal of Ages (Halls of Stone). Storyweavers, get ready to spin your webs … This is the type of match where a good blow-by-blow account in the comments can go a long way toward swaying the vote. But first, the pound ground rules: This match takes place inside the Tribunal of Ages in the Halls of Stone … or perhaps the Tribunal has been transplanted to the Two Bosses Thunderdome … or perhaps they’re someplace else … Any way you slice it, the Tribunal’s basic encounter mechanic functions as usual. Work with it, people! It’s a fantasy tournie. No matter where you choose to set the match and who you may choose to stand in for Brann Bronzebeard, his survival ultimately determines the success or failure of the mission. Anub’Arak is

World of WarCrafts: Cross-faction goblet

World of WarCrafts spotlights art and creativity by WoW players, including fan art, cooking, comics, cosplay, music and fan fiction. Show us how you express yourself; contact our tips line (attention: World of WarCrafts) with your not-for-profit, WoW-inspired creations. What happens when you combine an art class degree requirement with a WoW player who’s been locked out of the game due to the school’s unresolved router issues with Battle.net? For Hurbz of US Sargeras-A, you get “WoW on the brain,” plus this classy faction goblet. “This was my first real experience with pottery,” he admits, “and though I had done some projects earlier for the class, this was my first time using the potters wheel.” We’d say this guy deserves an A — and a clear path through his school network’s Battle.net issues. Let the guy get his game on so he’s not throwing WoW into every project he gets his hands on, hmm? More details from Hurbz on how his creation came together, after the break. Totally jazzed by his foray into clay, Hurbz gave us a blow-by-blow account of his

Two Bosses Enter: Chrono-Lord Epoch vs. Xevozz

Two Bosses Enter … but only One Boss Leaves, in WoW.com’s series of fantasy death matches. Welcome to Round Two of the five-man Wrath of the Lich King season. Grab a seat, and let’s get ready to rumble! It’s getting tighter in here … This week brings together Chrono-Lord Epoch (The Culling of Stratholme) and Xevozz (Violet Hold). Epoch comes to the Thunderdome after defeating Prince Taldaram back in August, while Xevozz earns his berth courtesy of a win against Ionar. Let’s go over the ground rules: All of the competitors’ abilities, including crowd control and other effects to which bosses are usually immune, work on their opponents. Assume that the opponents share similar levels, health pools and comparative overall damage output. This deathmatch takes place in neutral territory, which shall in no way hinder either opponent from using his usual resources. Get creative in your scenario, if necessary, but make it work in spirit. Don’t get caught up in gameplay mechanics and what actual players might do in each encounter. Don’t neglect style, story and scale. Welcome to the

Blood Sport: Beginner’s guide to arena, part I

Want to crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentation of their women? Blood Sport investigates the entirety of all-things arena for gladiators and challengers alike. C. Christian Moore, multiple rank 1 gladiator, examines the latest arena strategy, trends, compositions and more in WoW.com’s arena column. Listening Music: Royksopp’s Remind Me. We were emailed last week by Kohl, who politely recommended some listening music for Blood Sport this week. I was planning on featuring another kind of chill electronica, but Kohl just happened to recommend Royksopp among Hybrid and Kosheen — so enjoy the beats, Kohl. If you’d like to contribute listening music to the column, please make your recommendation in the comments below. If you want to reach me on a personal level, you can hit me up at colby <at> wow.com. Last Week: We discussed how to improve our play. We talked about humility, the myth of luck, practice, team hopping, and having fun. These are all important aspects of a winning player’s attitude and belief system. However, as a commenter or two mentioned — last

The Queue: VenezuelanDude

Welcome back to The Queue, WoW.com’s daily Q&A column where the WoW.com team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Adam Holisky be your host today. I’m glad this is a new week. Last week the WoW news was so boring. Nothing really happens on major holiday weeks, and that means I sit around the office twiddling my thumbs, wondering what havoc I can stir up. New week, new Queue, and drama to ensue! VenezuelanDude asked… “I am from Venezuela (South America) and we have very rigid laws to get dollars, the only way for me to play is buying a gamecard from another guy who can travel to the USA and buy them, but they sell the cards for $50 or $55, and that’s almost two times the regular price for a 60day gamecard. Now i had talked to some of my guildies about they buying me a card and i pay them with in-game gold, but they are afraid that’s against the Terms of Use, and I don’t want them or my own account banned… So here’s my question, do you think thats wrong? Blizzard is getting their money, but there’s a transaction involving real money with virtual money

One Boss Leaves: King Dred chomps Herald Volazj

Two Bosses Enter … but only One Boss Leaves, in WoW.com’s series of fantasy death matches. This season’s combatants come from the original five-man instances of Wrath of the Lich King. The heat’s on in the Two Bosses Thunderdome — not only in the ring itself, as competitors slash, cast and bash one another on their way toward the final matchup, but in the comments too. How will style balance substance? Who can make the best case for a victory? This week, the votes pointed to King Dred. The great devilsaur raked opponent Herald Volazj 50% to 46%. Spectators who sided with King Dred put their faith in his sheer power. “… I think this one will have to go to Dred,” observed Psiwave. “I’m a Herald fanboy (Lovecraft FTW!), but the herald is punching at mist here. Dred runs on pure instinct: no doubts, no regrets, just hunger.” But plenty of readers believed Volajz’s tricks would carry the match. Random: Volajz. Insanity will ruin Dred. Think about the mechanics. Each member of your group must kill clones of the other members, right? But after defeating your own

Patch 3.3 PTR: Epic ammo

Here’s some good news for hunters in the next patch that I don’t think we’ve covered on its own yet. Huntsman’s Lodge points out that there are two new types of craftable epic ammo on the PTR for us to load up. Iceblade Arrows and Shatter Rounds are both learned by engineers who rep up with the Ashen Verdict, the new faction to go along with the assault on Icecrown. Both add a whopping 91.5 damage to ranged weapon DPS, and of course they’re BoE, so all you’ll need is an engineer buddy honored with the new guys. One catch: arrows require Gnomish engineering, and the bullets require Goblin engineering. Interesting choice by Blizzard, but it shouldn’t be too big a problem, especially since mats are pretty cheap anyway (two Crystallized Shadow for the arrows and two Crystallized Earth for the bullets). Sounds good to me. Still no sign of those great ammo plans we heard about way back when, but more damage (especially some so relatively easy to get) is never a bad thing.

Return of the Grimtotem

Cocles over at Loregy.com (who I actually got to meet the other day — good guy, and check out his license plate) has an interesting idea about something he spotted in the information about the Cataclysm zones the other day. Thousand Needles is getting a revamp, including possibly a new instance, and Cocles says that could mean something awesome: the return of the Grimtotem clan (just a warning: there is a more serious spoiler later in that post). I’m in. I love the “dark Tauren,” and would love to see more from them. Plus, while we’ve seen plenty of troll instances, Cocles says we haven’t seen a Tauren instance in the game (and all we can think of is good old Mr. Smite). And we haven’t really heard from the Grimtotems since that whole issue with the spirit beast taming. It’d be nice to fight some cows for once. There’s lots of lore to mine there, too: Magatha is the reigning matriarch of the clan, and not only is she buddies with the Forsaken (obviously there’s been something happening with them during Wrath), but she’s rivals with Cairne Bloodhoof as well. It

Mr. T promotes the Mohawk Grenade

Not only is the Mohawk Grenade real and in-game, but Mr. T put it there. That’s what we learn in this new commercial, a sequel of sorts to the old “Night Elf Mohawk” joke a long while back. Not only is T (not The T, just T) decked out in a Murloco’s Taco’s T-shirt, but he shows the in-game item in action. It’s how he makes the World of Warcraft look good. I love it — well done, Blizzard. Great kickoff to the holiday marketing season, and it’s awesome that they’ve got the commercial (which we assume you’ll soon see on television) promoting the actual in-game item in a quality way. Sure, The Old Republic and a few other MMOs might be knocking on WoW’s door, but who wouldn’t want to play a game where you can throw a grenade and make people look like Mr. T? Maybe this is where all those newbies will be coming from.
